What is carb cycling?

Carb cycling is a dietary method that uses varying amounts of carbohydrates on specific days to simultaneously optimize fat burning and muscle retention. This basically means that you will be able to lose the fat but keep your muscle. Sounds almost too good to be true. Fortunately for you, and for me, it’s not. The “cycle” of 3 low carb days and 1 high carb day will allow you to perform your best, not feel like you’re missing out on ANY foods, and get you lean as can be.

Origin Story

First off. I have been eating this way for years. I had always struggled to reach my fitness, health, and aesthetic goals, and it was not until I started to carb cycle, that I truly hit my stride, upped my performance in the gym and on the pavement, and actually began to look the way I always thought I should based on how I was training.

Some might say, Mike you have probably always just been in shape, had abs, and never had to work hard for this. I wish that was true or myself and my clients. But, when I was in high school, despite being a 3 sport athlete, I found myself tipping the scales at 240lbs (that's when I stopped weighing myself), and have spent the next 20 years trying to find out what works for me, and my clients to get us to our health and fitness goals.

Why carb cycle?

For years I was always strong and ate particularly well. However, even though I was basically eating a Paleo diet, I was still consuming copious amounts of carbohydrates. The problem with this for most people is that we live 95% of our lives in a fat burning state. We are in a low heart rate zone for most of our day, where we are primarily burning fat. Carbohydrates are intended to be used to quick burst anaerobic activities like sprinting to supply bursts of energy - think 80% of your max heart rate. Anything below this, and fat will likely be your main source of energy.

But carb cycling isn't a low carbohydrate diet. It's a framework of eating the foods you love, while fluctuating lower carb and higher carb days, to utilize fat for energy, while maintaining your muscle. While I carb cycle I typically still eat chocolate, bread, pasta, steak, french fries, potatoes, etc, but in a planned and reasonable way.

Carb cycling is a manageable "lifestyle" the requires a little planing, but will pay off in the way tou feel and look.

It hasn't always been easy

I struggled with my weight for years, and always wondered why I wasn't getting the results I thought I should based on how hard I was working out.

Sustainability

Carb Cycling is not just a crash diet to get you to lose 20lbs in 30 days. It is about learning a way of eating that helps you take control of your body, reach your goals, and feel healthy and confident for life.

The point of the Challenge Guide and the included resources is to make carb cycling as easy as possible for you, so you can just focus on eating the foods you love, and getting the results you want.

The combination of LOW CARB DAYS, which help you burn fat, and HIGH CARB DAYS which help you recover and not feel deprived, allow for sustainable use of carb cycling.
